| The report first examines the textual features and language characteristics of the excerpted One Crazy Summer and then investigates the translation methods and techniques by employing Nida’s functional equivalence. It goes beyond to explore the principles and methods of translating children’s literature from English into Chinese.Functional equivalence theory is based on the comparison of the way of understanding and appreciation on the part of source language readers with that of the target language readers. So it focuses on the communicative function of translationand takes the target reader acceptance and mentality into account. With the direction of functional equivalence and three principles, which refer to equivalence principle, reader response principle and aesthetic principle, the author sums up the translation of cultural-loaded words, long sentences, rhetorical devices at lexical, syntactic and stylistic level respectively. The report consists of five parts, namely the introduction, project process description, theoretical foundation, case study and conclusion. The first part briefly introduces the background and significance of the project,a simple profile of the book one crazy summer and the author,as well as text analysis;the second part describes the basic process of the translation project, including pre-translation preparation, translation difficulties, proofreading and correction to the original draft of the translation;the third part presents the theoretical foundation of the translation report—the development and content of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the characteristics of children’s literature translation, and the application of the theory in translation projects;the fourth part is the focus of the report,,the author of this report analyzes the practical application of relevant translation strategies in the excerpts of One Crazy Summerfrom the perspective of Eugene Nida’s translation theory, and finally works out an appropriate translation;the final section is the conclusion of this report, outlining the major findings, limitations and giving suggestions for further practice and study. And the source text and its translation are attached after the main body in the appendix for reference. This report has both theoretical and practical implications.Nida’s functional equivalencetheory is applied to children’s literature translation project. The author of this report holds that functional equivalence can shed some light for children’s literature translation. From a practical point of view, the report can provide some references and suggestions for children’s literature translation into Chinese. In translating children’s literature works, the author also holds the idea that it is highly necessary to spare no efforts to convey the original author’s intention and to understand the target reader’s expectations and needs of the translation. |
