| China is the hometown of tea and the cradle of tea culture. As an essential part of Chinese traditional culture, tea culture is also the treasure of our traditional culture. With the opening of the Silk Road, tea culture has gradually spread to the outside world so that more countries are familiar with Chinese culture and history. Therefore, tea culture translation plays a vital role in transmitting traditional Chinese tea culture, which also created a harmonious melody to boost the Sino-foreign cultural exchanges. This thesis is a practice report based on the translator’s translation of The Classic of Chinese Tea from Chinese to English(C-E).The Classic of Chinese Tea mainly introduces tea producing techniques and the development of tea culture in the main historical periods, analyzes the relationship between tea and culture, and further reflects the diversified tea culture in different parts of China. To be specific the thesis is based on the translation of the five sections about Tea Culture,i.e.;The Connotation and Function of Tea Culture;Tea and Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism;Tea and Marriage Customs;Tea and Worship Ceremony, and The Teahouse Culture.Based on the translator’s translation practice, the translator gives priority to the analysis of translating the culture-loaded words,four-character expressions and long sentences.Specifically, transliteration plus annotation and literal translation are the two methods adopted to translate culture-loaded words, while free translation and integration are used for the translation of four-character expressions.Combination and inversion are used in translating long sentences. The report shows that in order to translate culture with Chinese characteristics, the translator should not only adopt flexible translation strategies in accordance with the historical and cultural backgrounds, but also focus on the accurate expression of the implied meanings in the source text to preserve the flavor of the original language. |
