A Practice Report On The C-E Translation Of Narratives About South Lake(an Excerpt)

It is of great significance to tell the stories of South Lake,Changshu,and Jiangnan(south of China)under the guidance of Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.In the context of the ecological restoration project of South Lake Wetland,South Lake has heralded a new start and a promising future.This translation practice report is based on the C-E translation of Narratives About South Lake(an Excerpt),namely,“Big Project,Huge Investment,and Great Pattern”.The author hopes to study and reflect on the problems encountered in this publicity translation practice,figure out their solutions,and summarize the shortcomings and deficiencies in the process of translation through this translation practice report,so as to improve the translation quality and efficiency.This excerpt,featured by plain and simple language,narrates the local conditions of the South Lake and the strategic decision-making and scientific planning of the South Lake Wetland construction.Firstly,the source text was analyzed in two aspects:introduction to source text,and features of source text.Secondly,the parallel texts were read and analyzed.Thirdly,the source text was translated via translation tools and methods after a thorough reading and understanding of this text.Notably,there are a lot of technical terms about water conservancy,animals,and plants in this text,which promote popular science and publicity to some extent.Besides,translation at the lexical and syntactic levels was an emphasis in this translation practice report.In the case analysis where “English thinking modes” and “Chinese characteristics” were combined,four-character structures were translated via omission,conversion,and literal translation,culture-loaded words were translated via transliteration + annotation and paraphrase,long sentences were handled with linear translation,inversion,and division,and subjectless sentences were translated by adding implied subjects and converting non-subject components into subjects.In future translation practice,systematical studies will be conducted at the lexical,syntactic,and textual levels to solve the problems encountered in tourism publicity translation,and the methods of tourism publicity translation will be explored and put into practice.Moreover,this translation practice report is expected to provide some references for other translators engaged in the tourism publicity translation.
