This thesis is an English-Chinese translation report, taking chapter one of Between the World and Me as the source text.In this chapter, the author describes his feelings of inhabiting a black body and the damage done to it,and points out racism is deep-rooted in American history and will continue to exist. As non-fictional literature, the source text is challenging to translate, due to its mixed writing styles, philosophical language and profound thoughts. The translator, under the guidance of parallel texts and Peter Newmark’s Text Typology, applies the strategies of semantic translation, specifically the translation skills of keeping the lexical meaning, structural order, figures of speech and quotation’s styles of the source text,to be faithful to the source text, and resorts to communicative translation such as the skills of changing lexical meaning, reorganizing structural order, changing figures of speech and adding to annotation to produce on the target readers an effect as close to that readers of source text. From the translation practice, the reporter has learned a lot.First of all,the translator has found that text typology can guide the translation of non-fictional literary translation.Using the strategies of semantic translation and communicative translation together can serve to the principles of non-fictional literary translation——faithfulness, readability and elegance.Secondly, the translator has been aware of her deficiency in translation. She will try her best to read more books to enrich her knowledge, and to do more translation practice to improve her English and Chinese.Last but not least, the translator has found that she really loves translation and she will devote herself to translation.
