| George Eliot is a very famous and important writer in UK’s 19 th century,whose works are various and popular for people to read and analyze.The study about her and her works in our country started in 1980 s,and the products are various and in large quantities now.On the one hand,it shows the scholars’ great interest to her;on the other hand,it also shows the abundant content and profound thoughts in her works.She creates many classic feminine characters,including beautiful and vain Heidi in Adam Bede,smart and kind Maggie in The Mill on the Floss,and knowledgeable Romola in Romola and so on.This article is based on the find that her works include a journey of female roles ‘growing up,which is resistance,searching and compromise through the analysis of the Maggie and Romola as well as the feminine characters in Middlemarch.The paper consists of four chapters.Chapter one introduces the author and her works.It also includes the current status of the study of George Eliot both home and abroad.Chapter two discusses the journey of the female roles ‘ growing up in three novels in detail,including Maggie’s journey of resistance for subject consciousness of body 、economic independence and emotion in The Mill on the Floss,Romola’s journey of searching for gender relation、female identity and female value in Romola and female roles ‘journeys of compromise with love in Middlemarch.Chapter three discuses Gorge Eliot’s critique for the female dissimilation in Victorian period and her suggestions for harmonious gender relations.Last chapter summarizes the whole content of the article. |
