Both the Western orchestra and the Chinese folk music ensemble have a long history. The former evolved from the chamber music ensemble, while the latter evolved from the Chinese folk instrumental ensemble into today’s Chinese folk orchestra.Western and folk music have different qualities and the conductors’ way of handling the style of two versions of the same music and their cognition of the basic requirements of each are important. This essay will interpret the music processing for conducting of these two kinds of orchestras through the analysis of the background, style, score and conducting method for Moon Mirrored on a Reflecting Pool and Butterfly Lovers. There are four parts to this essay. The first part is the introduction, which mainly focuses on the reason for choosing the topic as well as the background and content of the research. The second part explains the background of the two pieces and consists of the form analysis of both. The analysis is mainly of Moon Mirrored on a Reflecting Pool based on folk orchestral version revised by Peng Xiuwen and the western orchestral version revised by Lu Xing.Analysis of Butterfly Lovers is based on the Western orchestral version by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao and the folk orchestral version arranged by Zhang Dasen. The third part introduces the conducting method for Moon Mirrored on a Reflecting Pool and Butterfly Lovers and analyzed in detail four aspects of Chinese and Western orchestras: instrumental arrangement, sound acoustics, tone and dynamics. In keeping with the thesis proposal, this study concentrates on Moon Mirrored on a Reflecting Pool so that the conducting of the whole piece is analyzed in the fourth part and only features an analysis of the introduction of of Butterfly Lovers. The epilogue summarizes the central idea of the whole thesis.
