| Given the globalization over recent decades,cross-cultural communication is of more and more enduring importance. As one of the best-known Chinese traditional musical theatres, kunqu opera is found carrying abundant cultural traditions, customs and practices, thus posing great challenges to the well-received translation of specific projects.Based on the academic translation of movement between reality and imagination in contemporary kunqu performance —a study of the garden version of the peony pavilion, this thesis attempts to discuss the practical ways of introducing terms and theories, act names, librettos and other elements of kunqu opera to English-speaking readers. The writer normally adopts the strategy of “pinyin(original text/ English translation)” when it comes to kunqu terms for the first time. The skills of free translation, transliteration, complement and condensed translation are also used to properly transfer cultural information to target audiences. |
