This is a translation project report on the translation of The Law of Sex Discrimination-Fourth Edition, which was co-written by J.Ralph Lindgren,Nadine Taub,Beth Anne Wolfson and Carla M.Palumbo.The source text was excerpted from the first chapter of the book“The Historical Context”,which expounded sex-based discrimination in the law of America and the efforts women had made in pursuit of equal opportunities in workplaces and civil rights through specific cases.Sex-based discrimination is still prevalent in many countries due to the traditional patriarchy society and ingrained sex stereotypes.Sophisticated and systematic legal practice mode has gradually taken shape in America over the past decades. The author hereby chose this book as the translation material and strove to have better understandings of the background and development track of sex discrimination due to the limitations of the law. Moreover,it has significant referential meaning in dealing with such kind of social issues and learning the related background information of the laws.In the process of translation, the author found that the Functional Equivalence was suitable for solving most of the problems encountered in translating this book.Since Chinese and English respectively belong to different language families, there are lots of differences in their language expressions.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence, the author tried to get rid of the limitations of the language structure of the source language and convey the proper expressions based on the skillful use of translation skills including literal translation, free translation,etc..Through this translation practice, the author has learned to know that the translator should make good preparations before the translation in order to have thorough understanding of the source text.Besides, since translation is complicated, translators should constantly improve their translation skills in practice and deepen their understanding of both Chinese and foreign cultures.
