A Study Of Translating Foregrounded Features In Red Poppies From The Perspective Of Literary Stylistics

In literature,content is inseparable from form.Therefore,in order to fully convey the meaning,literary translators still need to identify the formal features of the source text(ST)and to reconstruct their unique artistic values in the target text(TT).For the purpose of preserving both meaning and form in the TT,it is essential for translators to clarify the relationship between them,to figure out how the original author manipulates linguistic forms to achieve the thematic and artistic effect.Literary stylistics,focusing on how the linguistic choices contribute to the thematic and artistic significance,may shed some light on literary translation.Foregrounding,one of the key concepts in literary stylistics,refers to the use of those prominent expressions that contribute to the thematic meaning and artistic effect.With those foregrounded features,translators can catch the characterized style of the ST and its unique meaning.Hence,it is of great significance to analyze the characteristic expressions from a literary stylistic approach with the focus of foregrounding in order to reproduce the thematic meaning and artistic effect in the target language.This paper chooses Red Poppies as a case study to approach literary translation from a literary stylistics perspective.It probes into the translation of foregrounded features in phonological,lexical,grammatical,and semantic aspects to explore how the translators recreate the foregrounded features.It concludes that in the translation of foregrounded language in Chen'ai Luoding,the translator mainly adopts the following three translation strategies: restoring the modifiers(literary translation);partially reserving the foregrounded features(paraphrase,substitution,transliteration);omission,thus successfully transmitting the aesthetic value and conveying the literary significance of the source text to a large extent.
