| Lexical chunks are two-word or multi-word combinations.They are important building blocks of texts and characteristic of high occurrence frequency,fixed structure and idiomatically determined meaning.Technical lexical chunks in technical texts are highly specialized in meaning,complex in structure,and highly frequent in recurrence,thus deserving thorough investigation.Understanding of features of technical lexical chunks in technical texts would enable translators to increase their reading speed and accuracy of comprehension,so the fluency of translation would also be improved.This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of All Electric Combat Vehicles(AECV)for Future Application,which is a technical report written by the Research and Technology Organisation(RTO)of NATO,provided by Beijing Collaborative Innovation Center for Electric Vehicles,Beijing Institute of Technology.According to the lexical chunks theory of linguistics,this report identifies the technical lexical chunks in the translation practice.On the basis of frequency of chunks,an English-Chinese technical lexical chunks list is worked out,which is expected to provide assistance for future translation work of texts in similar subject areas.In addition,this report analyzes the structure of lexical chunks and demonstrates the application of translation strategies-literal translation,amplification and emission,word conversion and abbreviation interpretation-in the translation of technical lexical chunks.Supported by lexical chunk theory,this report is a tentative exploration of how to improve translation efficiency of scientific and technical texts.It is expected that the theories and translation strategies discussed in the report as well as the list of technical lexical chunks provided can be beneficial to the translators in the field of science and technology. |
