| Science and technology constitute the primary productive force.The development of society and growth in people’s living standards are closely related to the progress of science and technology.The evolution of information technology,such as big data,cloud computing and Internet of Things,is particularly important.As an approach to learn the latest technologies abroad,the translation of technical texts has attracted increasing attention.The selected translation material is a technical text published in the journal IEEE,named Big IoT Data Analytics: Architecture,Opportunities,and Open Research Challenges.This article,as a typical technical text,has many language characteristics:(a)containing numerous technical terms,proper nouns and abbreviations,(b)using complicated and passive voice sentences,as well as nominalized structures,(c)featuring logical and coherent.Furthermore,aiming to facilitate the target readers to grasp these technical texts more clearly and accurately,the translators are required to present the information in an accurate and concise way with strict and standard expressions.Thus,the appropriate theory option is important for translation guidance.Peter Newmark classified texts into expressive texts,informative texts and vocative texts and put forward two translation theories,Semantic Translation(ST)and Communicative Translation(CT).Semantic translation requires the translators to retain the language form of the original,while communicative translation attaches more importance to information transmission and readers’ response.Newmark indicates that semantic translation works well in expressive text translation guidance while the other translation theory is suitable for informative and vocative texts.In accordance with Newmark’s Text Typology theory,technical texts,which aim to convey information to readers,are informative texts.Thus,the communicative translation theory is adopted to guide the translation practice.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory,the author adopts different translation strategies,such as zero translation,liberal translation,and division,to explore the skills of technical texts translation at the lexical,syntactic,and textual level to remove the obstacles for the readers.Through this translation practice,the author hopes to learn more about big data and Internet of Things,have a better understanding and more flexible application of Newmark’s Text Typology and Communicative Translation,as well as make summary to the practice,improve the translation capability and provide some reference for translators in this field. |
