| Different nations have their own special languages and cultures. As a significant component of culture, languages can reflect colorful cultural phenomenon of a nation.Translation is a medium which can contribute to cultural communication among different nationalities, and can also bridge the cultural gap.And as the most important subject in translation, the translator is not only the implementer of translation activities, but also plays an important role in the process of cultural exchanges.Red Sorghum is one of Mo Yan’s representative works. What’s more,he is the first Nobel Prize winner for literature in China. With vivid language, the novel describes the folk heroes with primitive sense of justice and passion for life in Gaomi Northeast Township, who recalcitrantly fight against the Japanese invaders. As the translator of the novel,American famous Sinologist Howard Goldblatt reasonably applies a variety of translation methods and strategies making Red Sorghum remarkable in the worldwide.A number of scholars and critics increasingly pay close attention this English version.According to the literature obtained, the author finds that although the domestic and foreign scholars conduct numerous researches on it from various perspectives, there are few studies on the culture-loaded words from the angle of translation ecology. Therefore, the author employs Translation Ecology to analyze and explore the culture-loaded words in Red Sorghum, which offers a great research value to his translations.Translation ecology is an emerging interdisciplinary theory, founded in 2009 by Professor Xu Jianzhong who created the theory system by combining translation and ecology theories, and built the systematic research methods and theoretical principles. Its core is the pursuit of ecological balance. In the translational eco-environment,the translator will be restricted by the ecological, social, linguistic and other factors. When adopting the optimum principle and the law of restrictive factors, the translators can overcome the various obstacles encountered in the process of translating, and promote the harmonious development of the translation. This paper aims to show that from the perspective of the Translation Ecology theory,Howard Goldblatt tries to translate the culture-loaded words successfully in the source text, who is limited and influenced by the ecological, social, lingustic restrictive factors. The author will also discuss his translation strategies and methods adopted in the process of translating.Meanwhile the author attempts to find translation skills of culture-loaded words,so as to promote the development of the theory of Translation Ecology. |
