David Mamet-A Life in the Theatre is a biographical literature,it faithfully introduces the protagonist,David Mamet’s experiences of drama writing.David Mamet enjoys great honor in western drama filed,and his works always make profound influences in American society.With the aim of enabling more drama enthusiasts to know Mamet,translators should accurately understand the language style,and deliberate appropriate words to translate so as to present a precise translation.Based on the translation of Chapter 8,the author finishes the report accordingly.This report mainly studies the problems that the author faced in the course of the translation.Because the text is to make readers experience the charm of Mamet’s plays,the words and sentences,in the translation,should be refined and smooth.So the main question that puzzles the translator is how to make the translation lucid to Chinese readers.The language,especially in Mamet’s works,is of satire,so if the translation is in place,it will be full of fun,but the improper choice of words will make the translation flat and tedious.The main part of this report is divided into two parts: the application of the Chinese four-character structure of words and phrases.As Chinese four-character structure is mostly symmetrical in form and embodies the aesthetical function,the author decide to use it to make the translation vivid and interesting.
