English literature reading has an unparalleled advantage in language learning,which can not only enrich the cultural connotation of English curriculum,but also achieve the unity of instrumental quality and humanistic quality.In recent years,many scholars have paid great attention to literature reading again,but how to have an effective English literature reading class is still a problem to be researched.Meanwhile,experiential learning is also applied into English teaching,since it has been applied into other subjects for many years.Therefore,this study intends to have a case study on applying experiential learning into literature reading in junior high school to explore the effects and methods of this application.This thesis is going to clarify the following issues by case study.1)Will experiential learning help the junior high school students to have a good experience in literature reading?2)What are the characteristics of the students' experience in literature reading class?3)How does experiential learning take effects on junior high school students' learning experience?This study chooses two outstanding literature classes.Lesson?,the excerpts The Beggar from The Necklace written by Maupassant,was demonstrated in National Basic Education Reform Seminar about English Teaching in November,2015.While Lesson?,a poetry appreciation lesson about Blowing in the Wind written by Bob Dylan,was demonstrated in DC International Classes Festival in 2016.Through the research methods of classroom investigation,observation,video-recording and transcripts,this study attempts to analyze the data from the following parts,the outcome of learners,teachers' questioning and classroom activities.The findings of the research are as follows,Firstly,experiential learning does help the junior high school students have a good experience on literature reading.They like this lesson and want to have such kind of lessons in the future.Then,different genre of literature works has diverse characteristics on the students' experience.At first,in experiential fiction reading class,students' experience shows better in the sections about plots and characters,and students' experience's climax comes with the fiction's climax coming.Secondly,in poetry reading class,students' experience shows better in the sections about poetry's images and rhymes,and students' experience's climax coming with the poetry's theme presented.Finally,the atmosphere of literature reading class is active and harmonious,and the students talk more than the teacher does,which reflects the characteristic of a student-centered class.Thirdly,through the analysis of teacher's questioning and classroom activities,this thesis summarizes that in the experiential literature reading class,teachers' questioning and classroom activities are experience-based,emotion-based,and application-based.In the fiction reading class,role play and debating are adopted a great deal,while in poetry reading class,students prefer reading aloud and singing.This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One is about the background of the research and its significance as well as its purpose.Chapter Two is related with the definition and features of experiential learning and literature reading,as well as the relevant research at home and abroad.Chapter Three is about research methodology.Chapter Four is data analysis.And the last chapter draws a conclusion and gives some suggestions for further study as well as some limitations.
