ObjectiveTo investigate the compliance of Micro-nutrient Powder(Yingyangbao)among children in poor rural areas of China, and its influencing factors.MethodsBoth quantitative and qualitative investigates were used in this study. At the quantitative stage,334 caregivers of children aged 6-24 months were randomly selected from 2 counties of Guizhou,Shanxi and Yunnan province respectively, and surveyed by questionnaire.Questions of basic conditions of households, compliance of Yingyangbao, cognition and practice of scientific feeding were included in the survey. This paper give a statistical description by absolute quantity, constituent ratio and rate,as well as influence factors analysis by Chi-square test and non-conditional Logistic regression. At the qualitative stage, caregivers were devided into two groups according to the preliminary analysis of compliance.Base on the principle of information saturation, those with better compliance were interviewed by focus group discussion, and those with poor compliance were surveyed by individual in-depth interview. The interview outline was designed based on Health Belief Model, which contained questions like the caregivers’ perception of susceptibility and severity of malnutrition and anemia, benefits and barriers of eating Yingyangbao,self-efficacy and cues to action as well.Results1.Compliance of YingyangbaoAmong 334 caregivers,79.3%of them have good compliance. The compliance among areas, gender and age groups were higher than 69%.50.0%of caregivers preferred to blended Yingyangbao and water into a paste, and only 22.2%chose to blend it with complementary food. There were 43.1%and 20.1%caregivers bended Yingyangbao with a lot of water and formula respectively. The mainly way to access information and knowledge were face-to-face consultation(81.4%)and reading parent handbook(71.3%).2.Influencing factors of complianceAccording to the Chi-square test, some factors were related to the compliance statistically, which were age of children, complementary feeding patterns, caregivers’perspectives like whether they know the benefit of Yingyangbao, whether they had observed improvement of children,as well as whether children like the taste.Non-conditional Logistic regression showed that some factors could make a contribution to better compliance, which were exclusive breastfeeding at 6 month, caregivers’ believe of Yingyangbao ’s effect, better acception of Yingyangbao, observable physical improvements, getting information and knowledge from parent handbook.Qualitative analysis indicated some factors had positive influence on compliance, such as parents’ awareness of anemia and malnutrition’s consequence, observable physical improvements, repeated attempting when children cannot accept, full of confidence, village doctors’ follow-up,supports from family members,as well as diverse forms of health promotion.Conclusion1.The compliance of Yingyangbao has yet to be improved, especially among investigated children aged 6-11 months.2.Unscientific feeding is still a problem among poor rural areas, which is related to poor compliance of Yingyangbao.3.Some factors related to caregivers relate with compliance, such as caregivers’ cognition of Yingyangbao’s effect, physical changes, confidence of feeding and the attitude and solutions facing with difficulties.4.Other factors like regularly follow-up by village doctors, supports from family members, information from parent handbook and other forms of health promotion also have certain influence on the compliance.
