Since 19th century, the British coal industry has entered a period of rapid development and peaked in the early 20th century. But the serious coal workers’pneumoconiosis also accompanied this process to produce. The emergence and prevalence of pneumoconiosis in coal workers was closely related to the work of British coal miners at the time, the progress of coal mining technology and the health status of coal miners. The coal mining in Britain has a long history,so the pneumoconiosis in the United Kingdom also has a longer history, limited by the medical level in various historical periods, the medical profession has experienced a very tortuous and complicated process in the cognition of pneumoconiosis in coal workers. After the establishment of the National Coal Board in 1946,it immediately began to deal with pneumoconiosis.By constructing basic medical service system, carrying out medical research on pneumoconiosis of coal workers, measuring the content of dust in coal mine and popularizing dust inhibition measures, the momentum of the spreading of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis has been effectively restrained. However,as the National Coal Board had always been the protection of coal production as their primary goal, resulting in dust suppression measures in the implementation of some delay and errors. This article is mainly from the following three parts of the discussion:The first part outlines the background of large-scale outbreak of pneumoconiosis in British coal workers. The rapid development of the British coal industry in 19th century and 20th century made the coal mine quantity, the coal production and the workers increase greatly,so the influence group of the coal workers’ pneumoconiosis was quite huge.At this time, the huge progress of mechanization in coal mining and transportation led to the emergence of dust in coal mines, which created conditions for the explosion of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis. The health of the coal miners at that time reflected that the British society was not concerned about the survival of coal miners,to a certain extent,it could help us understand why coal workers’ pneumoconiosis was epidemic in the United Kingdom. The second part introduces the prevalence of pneumoconiosis in the United Kingdom and the cognitive process of the medical profession in Britain to the coal worker’s pneumoconiosis. This disease was widely popular in Britain in the first half of the 20th century, causing severe disability and death, its impact is shocking.Because the coal workers’ pneumoconiosis is a complex medical problem, its cognitive process is very tortuous. With the improvement of medical level and the depth of related research, medical experts finally figured out the causes of pneumoconiosis in coal workers--excessive inhalation of coal dust. The third part introduces the measures of the National Coal Board to deal with the coal workers’ pneumoconiosis.Through the establishment of a variety of medical research departments,to carry out large-scale X-ray inspection, the determination of coal dust, for coal mining face water injection, the release of dust masks and other measures, coal workers’ pneumoconiosis had finally been effective control. Finally, the paper discusses the work of the National Coal Board in the treatment of the coal workers’ pneumoconiosis.
