Pipa Ji, the story of lute, written by Gao Ming, is a classical drama script handed down since Ming Dynasty. Through its moralization function, it was loved by both the emperor and the people. Due to its varied editions and professional woodcut skills, it has many text studies but seldom Woodcut Illustrations specialized research. The Woodcut Illustrations of Pipa Ji not only presents the carving styles of the Ming Dynasty but also echo to the text, a perfect entirety, has enlighten today’s art history research and woodcut practice.This thesis basically study on the woodcut illustrations in the Wanhu Xuan(Tiger‐play pavilion)edition of Pipa Ji in the Wan Li period. It was the representative of more than twenty illustration editions of Pipa Ji in the Ming Dynasty. Based on the gist of the text and illustrations of the story, this thesis examining the predecessors’ study, solving the problems of the inherit of the illustrations, presenting artistic features and its creators. Finally, recarving the illustrations the of Pipa Ji, record the key point of the process to representing the of traditional carving technics and hope do some help to the engraving studies.
