| God is not only the theme of Theology, but also the theme of Literature and Art. Jorge Luis Borges is one of the great writers of the twentieth century. His works relate to the theme of "God" frequently, and his writing is obviously influenced by rich theological knowledge and philosophical knowledge.Different from the God in Religion and philosophical speculation, "God" in Borges’s works is a kind of poetic existence. Through imagining the mirror world, making up the phantom of a dream and setting the infinite things, Borges made his wisdom thinking about God into a poetic way. God is no longer the object of religious belief, neither the philosophical ontological meaning of God, but a poetic God,who is imagined and invented by the writer in his stories, and full of the writer’s subjective feelings. Therefore, God is a concrete image but also full of paradoxes in Borges’s works. God’s poetic images are both specific "image" and "numerous images", which contain everything in the universe. God is both "one" and "all". In a word, God is a mysterious paradox. Through this paradoxical expression about the image of God, Borges view the suffering and happiness of mankind from God’s perspective. He described the human survival and death in the "labyrinth" based on the human being living dilemma. Borges didn’t long for immortality because of the "labyrinth", but he looked forward to a world beyond death. In Borges’s view, the way out of the "labyrinth" is the self discovery and confirmation. Borges devoted his life to explore "who am I", he insisted that author’s writing is autobiographical, so Borges and his greatest creation-another Borges met through writing. The meeting of two Borges shows his great talent in the art world. The happiness and misery about "me" is also the confusion about the universe and God. Borges had been trying to break through the desperate nothingness with his love and loneliness writing. |
