| The purpose of this study was to investigate what effects English reading strategies training in EFL have on the English reading performance of Chinese college students.It was hypothesized that English reading strategies training would improve students’ awareness of using reading strategies and reading comprehension abilities.It is further assumed that English reading strategies training would improve students’ English reading proficiency.The subjects of the study are 59 students majoring in applied chemistry of Tianjin Polytechnic University.Those freshmen all have passed the National College Entrance Examination and they were randomly assigned to two classes.One class received the reading strategies training while the other class received no training.Class one which has 30 students was the experimental,while class two which has 29 students worked as the control class.The experimental class will receive the intensive reading strategies training for 16 weeks,while class two,the control class,would just follow the syllabus without special training for them.The students had an English reading performance test as well as a questionnaire before training.Then the experimental class will receive the training for 16 weeks,the last week all the students would have the reading test and finish answering the questionnaire.This study finds that English reading strategies training has a significant effect on raising students’ awareness of using English reading strategies.Also the English reading strategies training has effectively improved students’ performance on English reading.Most of the students showed a positive attitude towards English reading strategies training. |
