Yue Yu's "History Of The History" Vocabulary Research

Dashing(Pillar Histories)is a literary sketch written by Song Dynasty(960-1279)scholar Yue Ke(l183-1243).The book has 15 chapters depicting 140 stories of dignities,cultural and political events of the time.It covers a wide range of social life with a large vocabulary,thus has a great research value in lexical study.This article attempts to make a comprehensive study of words in this historical book and offers some lingusitic data for revising the Grand Chinese Dictionary.This thesis has six chapters.In the first chapter,it gives a general introduction of the book Tingshi,summaries precedent studies and clarifies the research subjects and methods.The second and the third chapters depicts the meaning of new words in Tingshi and how the new words were created under the social circumstances at that time.The fourth chapter summarizes important words with explicit explanation and points out that the Grand Chinese Dictionary has missed out some important words in history and needs more precise meaning for some words.The fifth chapter further puts forward some examples for the Grand Chinese Dictionary to revise its mistakes in explaination and documentary evidence on the basis of the comprehensive analysis of words in Tingshi.The final chapter summaries the study of words in Tingshi and concludes the research findings.With guidance from lexicological and exegetical studies,this thesis adopts inductive,empirical and literature review methods in analyzing the meaning of words in Tingshi.This article discusses the meaning of words both diachronically and synchronically in an effort to offer significant materials for the history of Chinese lexicology and for compilation of the Grand Chinese Dictionary.This article also lays the foundation for further study to explore the lingusitic value of Tingshi.
