Qi Jiguang's Poetry Studies

As the Anti Japanese hero in the Ming Dynasty,Qi Jiguang have earned fame based on great strength and military exploits.But,few people know Qi Jiguang’s literati identity and literary works.Poetry and prose are the main way of literati to expressing emotion and opinions.It cannot be more truly approached with the important historical figure without the study on the poems of Qi Jiguang.This thesis mainly tries to open his heart and appreciate the poets of the military officer,which are based on the poetry collection and his military books.Poetry is the best way to express his feelings for Qi Jiguang.With the change of his situation,his poetry also presents different styles in his former and later writing process.It is clear of his great ambition and inner sentiment in “ Holding spears and prancing horse for serving the country” or “For whom am I to make my hair sparse grey”,and the poetry of high spirited style or sad and angered style.Besides,Qi Jiguang enjoys making full use of various themes and forms in Poetry.However,it shows that he has excellent talent,a great ambition and is rootless and homesick without vigorous health in his poetry,which depicts a lonely millitary officer who has gained brilliant achievements in war.Qi Jiguang’s essays are varied in Heng Shuo Gao,in which some are prefaces,narratives,epitaphs and so on,others are funeral orations,prayers and pledges.In addition to the comprehension of the Confucian classics,there are excerpts while reading books on the art of war in the first part of Yu Yu Gao.Besides,there are short stories and fragmentary argumentations.The short stories which are fatansy novels are brief and heterogeneous in content,record the things he knew or met with and tend to moral criticism.Qi Jiguang likes writing in his spare time.Containing his thoughts,his works carry aesthetic value,social value and historical value.Generally,the writing of a military officer is always lack of implication,including his works.However,we couldn’t deny his achievement in literature.No one beyond the great achievement both in literature and military except for Guo Deng.
