| Self-control is defined as the ability to override or alter one’s dominant response tendencies, adopt activities which adapt to the social situation.Self-control is an advanced psychological activity for human(Tangney,Baumeister,&Boone,2004).Good self-control seems to contribute to a great many desirable outcomes,Furthermore, the failure of self-control has immense personal and societal repercussions.Researches suggest that ego depletion probably directly result in the failure of self-control.The ego depletion strength model proposes that attending to the self-control behavior can become depleted causing subsequent performance to become worse. As previously noted, the dependent variable of ego depletion only conducive to stop control.Recent studies indicate that self-control not only contains stop control, but also start control(initiate and maintance goal).Previously has not to explore the relationship of ego depletion and different types of self-control,personality and individual differences. Therefore,we adopt the method of evoke ego depletion, different types of self-control and the related self-control personality types to exploy ego depletion in the stop control and start control in two experiments. We also studied the moderation effct of the different self-control personality to provide evidence for the different types of self-control in different personality traits and different task types view.In experiment 1,we aimed to test the influence of ego depletion on the stop control, there was a significant interaction of ego depletion and trait self-control on the stop control. One hundred and sixty undergradutes were randomly assigned to two conditions:ego depletion condition and control condition. We used a modified Stroop task to evoke ego depletion,a modified stop-signal task to test the ability of stop control and Self-Control Scale to test the trait self-control.The results indicated that ego depletion slows the response inhibition.Meanwhile, there was a significant interaction of the ego depletion and trait self-control on the stop control.Ego depletion significantly slows the response inhibition in low trait self-control,while has no effect on high trait self-control.There was no significant interaction of the ego depletion and action orientation on the stop control. In experiment 2,we aimed to test the influence of ego depletion on the start control, there was a significant interaction of the ego depletion and action orientation on the start control. One hundred and sixty undergradutes were randomly assigned to two conditions:ego depletion condition and control condition. We used nondominant hand writing task to evoke ego depletion,a modified goal neglect task to test the ability of start control and Demand-related action orientation Scale to test the action orientation. The results indicated that compared to control condition.Stroop interference effect was significantly larger in ego depletion condition.Meanwhile, there was a significant interaction of the ego depletion and action orientation on the start control.Ego depletion significantly reduce the ability of start control in low action orientation. There was no significant interaction of the ego depletion and trait self-control on the start control. In summary, this research suggests that ego depletion enhaces impulse response, while slows response inhibition.Besides, ego depletion easily results in goal neglect and reduce the ability of initiate and maintain goal.At the same time, trait self-control and action orientation have different effects in different types of self-control,there was a significant interaction of the ego depletion and trait self-control on the stop control, while there was a significant interaction of the ego depletion and action orientation on the start control.Based on the theoretical distinction within self-control.This research provides different personality traits and different task types of self-control between stop control and start control. |
