Sima Qian exerted his utmost effort on the history book Records of the Grand History in which the author described people of different social classes,unfolding a splendid rolling of Chinese history.The history of later Qin and early Han dynasty is one of the most outstanding parts of Records of the Grand History during this period,there were numerous heroes stepping into the historical stage.Some figures in Records of the Grand History are rather characteristic or with common features.Sima Qian is excellent in describing their special or general characters that readers can get an overall image of figures in the book.The thesis focuses on a special group of the later Qin and early Han dynasty——Advisers.The author wants to elaborate the role of the advisers during the Later Qin,Chu-Han period and early Han Dynasty as well as the transformation of the role.The aim of the thesis is to highlight Sima Qian’s progressive outlook on history,development,merits and virtues by summarizing the Sima Qian’s methods on character shaping.The thesis is divided into five parts:Part one is an introduction which is mainly about the research on singles and groups in Records of the Grand History,and some previous researches on the advisers as well as research status.The research value and the purpose of research will also be expounded.Part two is the chapter one which is about the fighting against Qin Dynasty.This part is divided into three subsections:(1)the social condition of the later Qin and the background of uprising,(2)the important commanders in chief(Chen She,Xiang Liang and Xiang Yu)in rebelling Qin dynasty,(3)the role of political and military advisers(Fan Zen,Song Yi)in the period of rebelling Qin dynasty.This part is for discussing why there is only a few advisers joining in the uprising and analyzing the significant roles of anti-Qin commanders.Part three is the chapter two which is about the representative figures among those advisers.This part is also divided into three subsections:(1)Han Xin,who had the situation well in hand;(2)Zhang Liang,who was an army adviser;(3)Xiao He,who was well qualified to devise strategies.This part is mainly about the important role of"three outstanding heroes of the early Han dynasty" in aiding Liu Bang to defeat Xiang Yu and establish the Han Dynasty,which highlights the important status of these advisers.The part four is the chapter three which is about the representative advisers during Han dynasty.This part will elaborate:(1)Lu Jia,a Confucian scholar who advocated kindheartedness and justice;(2)the advisers who are Taoists supporting the theory that to govern by non-interference;(3)the representative advisers who played a important role in stabilizing Han dynasty.The part five is the chapter four which is about the image-building art of advisers in that special period.The author is desire to highlight Sima Qian’s progressive outlook on history,development,merits and virtues in building the images of figures in later Qin and early Han dynasty by expounding Sima Qian’s choices of historical figures,comments on their contribution and virtues.From that we can understand the image of these advisers in a more comprehensive way.
