Energy conservation,in particular the home energy conservation has played an important role in coping with the energy crisis and global warming issues in recent years.Home Energy Management System(HEMS)is a central control system dedicated to manage and schedule the operation of household appliances, the charge/discharge of storage batteries as well as the operation of renewable energy generation system automatically. There are several reasons for applying HEMS.First,HEMS is an effective approach to conduct the demand response in smart grid.Second,HEMS is useful to reduce electricity bill for end-users.Third,HEMS is a desirable solution to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission for the whole society. This thesis focuses on the optimal energy management and appliance-operation scheduling problems for HEMS.It aims to study on how to build optimal scheduling models to reduce electricity bills and carbon emissions without sacrificing customers'comfort level when using the electric power. The main contribution of the thesis is as follows:Firstly,a novel optimal scheduling model based on real-time electricity pricing for HEMS is proposed. The model adopts integer programming method, and tries to minimize the total cost of electricity and maximize the comfort level of users,or minimize carbon emissions.Meanwhile, the specified operation time of each appliances as well as demand response requirements are considered as constraints. The model takes account of interruptible and controllable appliances, uninterruptible and controllable appliances as well as must-run and uncontrollable appliances simultaneous in a framework. Also, surplus power produced by solar photovoltaic panels is considered to be able to sell to utility.Next,a system model that can schedule the appliances and a distributed energy storage device is proposed for HEMS.The model considers the battery properties such as capacity as well as charge and discharge rates. On the basis of real-time electricity pricing and demand response, the model uses mixed integer programming method to achieve the same objectives as the first model by carrying out the task scheduling of appliances and charging/discharging the energy storage device. The proposed scheduling models take into account not only the practical home conditions, but also the application of renewable energy and other technologies such as demand response. Finally, the experimental results through simulation validated the effectiveness of the developed models. Each model can achieve the expected results corresponding to different objectives, and can meet the demand response requirement at the same time. Moreover, the impact of the different battery capability levels on the electricity bill of families is evaluated in the experiments.
