In the nature,the mechanical properties of rock mass are very complex.What's more,fuzziness,incompleteness,imprecision,and indeterminacy all exist in its various mechanical parameters.Joint roughness coefficient(JRC)is a quite important parameter for determining the shear strength in rock mechanics.Due to the incompleteness of our observations,measurements,and estimations,or the existing heterogeneity and anisotropism of itself.In these cases,we cannot always calculate or provide exact/crisp values,but we do need to approximate it.Neutrosophic number(NN)is composed of its determinate part and indeterminate part,it is very suitable for the description of the complex geological phenomenon in nature.It is effective to express the complete information of JRC by studying its anisotropy and scale effect using the NN function.The innovative research of this paper opens up a new way for the fine value of shear strength of rock mass discontinuities.The main research contents include:(1)Based on the elliptic equations of JRC for the piece of slate from Changshan,fitting the JRC values in different orientations,expressing the anisotropy by NN function JRC(?)and obtaining the change rate of anisotropy by derived function JRC'(?).(2)Based on the logarithmic functions of JRC for the piece of slate from Changshan,fitting the JRC values in different scales,expressing the scale effect by NN function JRC(L)and obtaining the change rate of scale effect by derived function JRC'(L).(3)The coupling analysis of the anisotropy and the scale effect of JRC.Do some research about the regularity of the degree of anisotropy of JRC with the sampling size of the joint surface.A two-variables neutrosophic number function JRC(?,L)(a curve surface)reveals the characteristics of anisotropy and scale effect of JRC.Then,the partial derivatives of the measure orientations ? and sample sizes L are obtained as the change rates,and compared with the preceding cases(1)and(2).The innovation of this paper includes two aspects: apply the neutrosophic number to JRC firstly at home and aboard,found the NN function can moreobjectively describe the characteristics of JRC,which obtains deterministic information and the uncertain information caused by various subjective and objective reasons of JRC;developed the coupling research of anisotropy and scale effect of JRC under the environment of neutrosophic number,explored the regularity of JRC anisotropy with the change of the sampling size,established a two-variable NN function which can simultaneously obtain the anisotropy rate and the scale effect rate of JRC.
