Huangguashan(4300-3500BP)site in Xiapu county,Fujian province,is a late Neolithic shell midden site, the representative dominated remains of which belong to Huangguashan culture. An intensive blast of stone, potteries,a nimal skeleton remains and layered shells were unearthed in 1989 and 2001,providing beneficial information on prehistorical cultural lineage and human activities along the coast of Eastern Fujian. This study applies carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic analysis on 18 animal skeleton remains, including pig, dogs, deer, and a tiger,by which we discussed some archaeological problems like the feeding strategies of animals, food resources of human and the subsistence economies.Ten pigs were proved to be valid, showing a wide range of ?13C and ?15N,varying in-24.1?-12.7‰ and 5.7?11.2‰,respectively.According to cluster analysis, the majority of pig were domesticated animals, whose diets were mainly C3 plants, with minor consumption of C4 plants and marine foods.3 dogs data represent the dietary habits of omnivores and carnivores, and there were significant dietary differences between identities. One of deer ?13C is more positive, indicating that its diet should be intervened by Huangguashan people mainly composing of aquatic plants and salt-marshes resources,or some millet. The tiger(?13C=-20.3‰,?15N=9.5‰)is ideal for us to reconstruct the C3 baseline of local terrestrial ecological context. In addition, the comparison of isotopic data between inland regions and coastal regions reveals that the animal feeding strategies and resources exploitation might have something to do with the dualistic agricultural structure with millet in the north and rice in the south. On the basis of overall cognition,by combining with relevant environmental documents, microscopic findings and archaeological evidences, our study indicates that there existed a multiple ecnonomic forms at Huangguashan site, including rice and millet agriculture, fishing and hunting economy and animal husbandry.
