Since the reform and opening up in 1978,China's economy has achieved leaping development. However, along with industrialization and urbanization,China's ecological environment is facing great pressure. The progress of ecological civilization construction has accelerated since The 18 th Communist Party of China National Congress. The extensive development model in the past was unsustainable and must be transformed into a sustainable green development model to promote high-quality economic development. This paper takes the urban agglomeration of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River as the research object, and explores the spatial and temporal evolution and influencing factors of regional ecological efficiency based on the extended DEA model and spatial econometric model. In terms of time, from 2003 to 2017,whether it was a metafrontier or a group frontier, the eco-efficiency of urban clusters in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River was relatively gentle, with small fluctuations.Due to the impact of heterogeneous technology, the metafrontier ecological efficiency is significantly lower than the group frontier ecological efficiency. There is a considerable degree of underestimation of the ecological efficiency of the urban agglomerations around Chang-Zhu-Tan and the urban agglomeration around Poyang Lake. From a spatial perspective,Changde,Huanggang,Xiangyang,Jingmen, and Xiaogan have always maintained high ecological efficiency values, while Xinyu,Ezhou, and Jingdezhen have always been in areas with ultra-low ecological efficiency values.Overall, there are many high-efficiency ecological efficiency areas in the Wuhan metropolitan area and there are many low-efficiency areas with low ecological efficiency in the urban agglomeration of Poyang Lake. This paper further examines the spatial autocorrelation of the ecological efficiency of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The global spatial autocorrelation results show that the spatial characteristics of the ecological efficiency of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River are not completely randomly distributed, and show a significant positive spatial correlation in some years. The local spatial autocorrelation shows that in the four survey years, the ecological efficiency of most cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River urban agglomeration area has obvious agglomeration characteristics in geographical space. In other words,high-efficiency cities are close to high-efficiency cities and eco-efficiency low-value cities are close to eco-efficiency low-value cities. In order to explore the mechanism of impacting the ecological efficiency of urban agglomerations in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, the spatial econometric model was used to examine the impact of six factors, including economic development, industrial structure, financial development, foreign capital utilization, technological innovation and population size,on ecological efficiency.Empirical results show that economic development significantly improves ecological efficiency, while financial development significantly reduces ecological efficiency, and the former has a much greater impact on ecological efficiency than the latter. The impact of technological innovation and population size on ecological efficiency is not significant. From the perspective of space spillover effects, industrial structure and foreign capital utilization have a significant negative impact on the surrounding areas, while financial development has a significant positive impact on the surrounding areas. Finally, based on the previous empirical analysis, the conclusions are summarized, and corresponding policy recommendations are proposed on how to improve the ecological environment and improve the level of ecological efficiency in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.
