This paper reviews the research status in the modification of bismaleimide(BMI)resin during the recent years,which includes chain toughening modification,allyl compounds toughening modification,thermoplastic resin modification,thermosetting resin modification,inorganic functional material modification,esters modification,rubber toughening modification,microgel modification and plasma treatment toughening effect.The future trends of BMI resins are analyzed and discussed.Firstly,BMI/DBA resin,BMI/CE resin and BMI/DBA/CE resin were synthesized in this paper,and then these resins were further modified by the addition of different modification materials to prepare BMI composites.And the resulting resin composites have been studied through various means of materials testing and characterization,including the micro-controlled electronic universal testing machine,impact testing machine,digital viscometer,infrared absorption spectroscopy(FT-IR),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA)etc.Multiple sets of mechanical performance data can be derived from the matrix resin material obtained by experiment,depending on the ratio of the experimental program.These characteristics were found after comparison,impact strength was between0.42~5.52KJ/m~2,flexural strength was between 27.94~107.40MPa,flexural modulus was between 2.28~3.67GPa,and rockwell hardness(HRC)was found to be 127.4.For the thermal properties of the resulting products,10%thermal decomposition temperature was between 430?to 450?.Furthermore,it is also found from the experiments that the modification of BMI by CE resin can reduce the viscosity of BMI system and thus improve its processing performance.For the BMI composite materials modified by nanoparticles,after the coupling agent and ultrasonic vibration treatment,the dispersion effect of nanoparticles in the BMI resin was greatly improved,thus the toughness of the resin was increased obviously.After modified by PC and PPO,the mechanical properties of the composites have been improved.Moreover,high strength composite materials were prepared by using carbon fiber and matrix resin.The results show that with the increase of carbon fiber content,the mechanical properties of the composites increased gradually,however,when the content of carbon fiber reaches a certain value,its mechanical properties decrease.
