Amorphous alloy is a metal material obtained by rapid condensation technology. It does not have a long-range ordered atomic structure of crystalline metal. It exhibits excellent physical and chemical properties at room temperature and has broad application prospects.Due to its high hardness, poor thermal conductivity and macro brittleness,it is a typical difficult material in machining.Although scholars have done a lot of research on the mechanical processing of amorphous alloys, the processing technology of amorphous alloys is still in the development stage.Understanding the cutting deformation and chip formation process of amorphous alloys has important guiding significance for actual processing. Therefore, this paper studies the cutting forces variation rule, chip formation process and tool-chip friction characteristics during the cutting process of amorphous alloy. The carbide-coated tool was used to cut the Vit-type amorphous alloy, stainless steel 304 and aluminum in the low-speed and medium-speed cutting range by orthogonal free cutting. The cutting forces during the cutting process of the material was recorded using a dynamometer, and the variation of the cutting forces of the amorphous alloy under different cutting parameters was analyzed.Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the chip shape of amorphous alloy, the deformation characteristics of the material during cutting and the formation process of the chips were analyzed.Based on the material properties of amorphous alloys, the formation process of sawtooth chips in amorphous alloys was analyzed, and the reason why amorphous alloys produced sawtooth chips at lower cutting speeds was explained. The effect of cutting speed and depth of cut on chip sawtooth spacing was investigated. It has been found that an increase in cutting speed and depth of cut increases the sawtooth pitch.Based on the momentum diffusion theory, the chip sawtooth spacing prediction model for different cutting parameters of amorphous alloys was established. The theoretical prediction values are in good agreement with the experimental values. The tool-chip friction characteristics of amorphous alloys were investigated. The tool wear morphology of amorphous alloys during low and medium speed cutting were observed. The tool-chip friction contact length of the amorphous alloy cutting tool was measured, and the factors affecting the blade-chip friction contact length were analyzed. The stress distribution of the rake face of amorphous alloy cutting tool was studied, and the stress distribution index of different machining parameters was calculated.
