| Objective:To observe the clinical efficacy of Feizhang 2 prescription and its effectson oxidative stress in patients with stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD)with the lung and kidney qi-yin deficiency syndrome.Methods:70 patients with stable COPD who met the traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)syndrome differentiation criteria of the lung and kidney qi-yin deficiency syndrome were enrolled. They were randomly divided into two groups(35 cases in the therapeutic group and 35 cases in the control group). On the basis of conventional western medicine, the therapeutic group was treatedwith Feizhang 2 prescription, while the control group was given placebo for 3 months.Meanwhile, clinical efficacy,TCM syndrome scores, lung function, the self assessment test of COPD(CAT)and the levels of SOD,GSH and 8-isoprostane in blood serum were recorded before and after treatment.Results:1.There were no significant differences in the gender, age, course of disease, severity of lung function before the treatment in the two groups(P>0.05).The results suggested that both groups were comparable.2.The total effective rate in the therapeutic group was 75.76%,and it was significantly higher than that in the control group which was only 45.45%(P=0.004).The TCM syndrome scores in both groups decreased significantly after 3 months treatment compared with baseline[(17.03±3.98)scores vs(14.12±4.73)scores in the control group,P=0.000;(16.3±4.78)scores vs(10.09±4.77)scores in the therapeutic group,P=0.000,respectively].But it dropped significantly in the therapeutic group than that in the control group 3 months later(P=0.001).3.There were no significant differences between baseline and 3 months later in FEV1,FEV1%and FEVi/FVC%in two groups(P>0.05).The CAT scores in the therapeutic group decreased significantly compared with baseline[(14.00±4.98)scores vs(10.36±3.27)scores,P=0.000].It dropped more significantly in the therapeutic group than that in the control group 3 months later[(10.36±3.27)scores vs(14.00±6.12)scores,P=0.004].Insignificant changes were found between baseline and 3 months later in CAT scores in the control group(P>0.05).4.After 3 months treatment, the levels of serum SOD,GSH elevated significantly and the levels of serum 8-isoprostane decreased significantly compared with baseline in the therapeutic group[SOD:58.71(51.98,146.01)U/ml vs 126.59(54.44,156.10)U/ml,P=0.04;GSH:(2.34±0.38)μM vs(2.62±0.57)μM,P=0.021;8-isoprostane:154.16(60.86,233.73)pg/ml vs 145.13(42.16,183.16)pg/ml,P=0.02,respectively].However,there were no significant difference between the therapeutic group and the control group after 3 months treatment.Insignificant changes were found between baseline and 3 months later in the levels of serum SOD,GSH and 8-isoprostane in the control group(P>0.05,respectively).5.There were no serious adverse reactions during the treatment in the two groups.Conclusion:1.The clinical curative effect of conventional western medicine combined with Feizhang 2 prescription was better than that of conventional western medicine only in patients with stable COPD with the lung and kidney qi-yin deficiency syndrome.2.Feizhang 2 prescription could reduce CAT scores, which indicated that it could improve the quality of life in patients with COPD.3.Feizhang 2 prescription could increase the levels of serum SOD and GSH andreduce the levels of serum 8-isoprostane in stable COPD patients.4.No obvious adverse reactions was observed after the treatment of Feizhang 2 prescription. |
