Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Wanbikang Pills for the trea tment knee osteoarthritis with liver and kidney deficiency syndrome,to probe i nto its prescription pattern, and to explore the mechanism of action of the “kid ney and liver nourishing” therapy in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis,so as to provide evidences for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis with the “kidney a nd liver nourishing” therapy. Methods: This was a randomized, controlled study where 68 patients meeting the dia gnostic criteria for knee osteoarthritis and the TCM syndrome were randomly a ssigned, using random number table,to the control group or test group each in cluding 34 patients. The control group received Diacerein Capsules+Glucosamin e Sulfate Capsules, and the test group received Wanbikang Pills+Diacerein Caps ules+Glucosamine Sulfate Capsules.Patient general characteristics,VAS pain sc ore,TCM syndrome score, and WOMAC scores were observed and recorded fo r both groups pre-and post-treatment.Statistical analysis was performed to eva luate the safety and efficacy of the treatments given to the two groups. Results: 1.By the end of the study,1 each patient had been excluded and dropped out in the control group,so that 32 patients in the group completed the study;2 patients had dropped out in the test group,so that 32 patients in the group completed the study. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in the proportions of exclusions or dropouts(p>0.05).2.Comparison of outcome measures within each group: In both groups,th ere were statistically significant changes in VAS pain score,TCM syndrome sc ore,WOMAC total score(including pain score, stiffness score and physical fu nction score)pre-and post-treatment(p<0.05).3.Comparison of outcome measures between the two groups: The test gro up showed better efficacy than the control group in terms of post-treatment TC M syndrome score and WOMAC total score(including stiffness score),with st atistically significant differences(p<0.05);there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in post-treatment WOMAC pain score or VAS score(p>0.05).4.Comparison of overall response for TCM syndrome between the two gr oups: In the test group,16 patients were markedly effective,12 were effective, and 4 were ineffective, accounting for the overall response rate of 87.5%;in the control group,9 patients were markedly effective,13 were effective, and 10 were ineffective, accounting for the overall response rate of 68.75%;the ove rall response rate was higher in the test group than in the control group, with statistically significant difference(p<0.05).5.In the course and after completion of the study,no significant adverse reactions or adverse events were observed in either group, and there was no st atistically significant difference between the two groups in the incidence of adv erse reactions or adverse events(p>0.05).Conclusion: Wan bikang Pills is effective for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis,as it could significantly reduce the TCM syndrome, relieve joint pain, and improve joint functional activities and stiffness;no adverse reactions or adverse events were observed in the course of treatment.
