ObjectiveTo investigate the status of spiritual needs of cancer patients and analyze their main spiritual needs;To understand the status of illness perception and social support of cancer patients;To explore the relationship among illness perception,social support and spiritual needs of cancer patients,and to provide theoretical support for subsequent researchers to formulate relevant intervention strategies.MethodsIn this study,194 cancer patients in the oncology department of Dalian hospital were selected.The cancer patients completed the questionnaires such as self-designed general information questionnaire,Spiritual Needs Questionnaire,Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire and Social Support Rating Scale.SPSS 21.0 statistical software was used for data analysis.Descriptive statistical analysis,t test,one-way ANOVA,Pearson correlation analysis and multi-factor regression methods were used.Results1.The scores of spiritual needs ranged from 4 to 64(23.98±10.46)points,among which the scores of active giving dimension(1.22±0.52)points and inner peace dimension(1.08±0.44)points were the higher.The scores of religion-prayer dimension is the lowest(0.38±0.67)points.2.Univariate analysis showed that the spiritual needs of cancer patients were different in religious belief,culture degree and course of disease(P<0.05).While in gender,age,monthly family income and disease types there was no significantdifference(P>0.05).3.The score of illness perception ranged from 13 to 70(36.48±9.11)points.The dimension scores from high to low was:emotional dimension(5.46±1.86)points,cognitive dimension(4.31±1.42)points,and understanding ability dimension(4.01±2.20)points.The spiritual needs were positively correlated with illness perception(r=0.162~0.351).The score of social support ranged from 27 to 60(42.08±5.86)points.which was higher than that of the national norm(34.56±3.73)points.The dimension scores from high to low was:subjective support dimension(6.18±0.92)points,objective support dimension(3.94±0.83)points and social utilization dimension(1.85±0.68)points.The spiritual needs were positively correlated with social support(r=0.164~0.421).4.Research shows that social utilization,subjective support,religious beliefs,emotional dimension,course of disease and culture degree enter regression equation,which are the influencing factors of spiritual needs of cancer patients.Conclusion1.The spiritual needs of cancer patients are at a moderate level,and the needs of active giving and inner peace are higher.Religion-prayer needs need to be improved and medical workers should pay more attention to it.In general demographic data,the lower of culture degree,the longer of course of disease,and the cancer patients with religious beliefs have the higher spiritual needs.2.The higher the score of cancer patients’ illness perception,that is,the more negative individual perception,the higher the degree of spiritual needs;The cancer patients receive more social support,and their spiritual needs are higher and more satisfied.3.Social utilization,subjective support,religious beliefs,emotional dimension,course of disease and culture degree are the factors affecting the spiritual needs of cancer patients.This suggests that medical staff should strengthen the guidance to cancer patients,pay attention to the role of social support system,respect for their religious beliefs and actively adjust patients’ mentality and their quality of life.
