Objective: The syndrome differentiation of excess and deficiency is of vital importance in clinical diagnosis. But it’s often difficult to differentiate between deficient and excessive pulses. However, the pulse condition is an objective reflection of qi and blood, yin and yang of human bodies. Therefore, the law of the deficient and excessive pulses in the Synopsis of Golden Chamber is studied here, aiming to provide reference and inspiration for the clinical pulse diagnosis and the syndrome differentiation of excess and deficiency.Method: By retrieving and looking up relevant literatures and materials, clearing up and summarizing the origin and development of Zhang Zhongjing’s sphygmology theories, concluding and summing up Zhang Zhongjing’s ideas on pulse methods, the author hereby explores the origin and connotations of deficient and excessive pulses, and forms a holistic view on deficient and excessive pulses and their clinical significance;then discusses the excess and deficiency of pulse condition from the elements of pulse condition and the features of Zhang Zhongjing’s pulse methods, analyzes the connotations of deficient and excessive pulses in the Synopsis of Golden Chamber, and summarizes the law of deficient and excessive pulses and the clinical implications.Results:(1)Deficient and excessive pulses are actually the essential embodiment of the basic substances of human bodies, like yin and yang,qi and blood.(2)Focusing on the virtual and real-like pulse of the "Golden Chamber",summarizing the laws of the virtual and real-like pulse, providing objective pulse diagnosis guidance for the analysis of the virtual and real pathogenesis, and expanding the clinical guiding significance of the virtual and real pulse. Conclusion: In essence, deficient and excessive pulses are the embodiment of people’s current body states like qi and blood, yin and yang. The clinical diagnosis shall not rigidly adhere to the pulse name, but should learn the essential connotations of pulse conditions,so as to offer objective pulse diagnosis guidance for the clinical syndrome differentiation of deficient and excessive pathogeneses.
