Objective: Anesthesia patient education can make patient experience better during anesthesia,have benefits on anesthesia safety.However,there is a lack of standardized preoperative anesthesia education contents.This study aims to explore the health care providers and patients’ needs on preoperative anesthesia education,construct evidence-based preoperative anesthesia educational content for general anesthesia patients.Methods: Scoping review,medical experts interview and patient interview were used to formulate the draft of anesthesia education content provided for general anesthesia patients.By content analysis,the results from exist evidence,experts’ opinion and patients’ need were summarized.Then,based on patient engagement research as theory evidence,focus group interview was used to establish the content of pre-operative anesthesia education provided for general anesthesia patientResults: 1.Scoping review: 313 literatures and 12 educational materials from anesthesia associations were involved.5 topics and 18 sub-topics of preoperative anesthesia educational contents were formed from content analysis.An overview of anesthesia as the beginning of education,so that patients have a basic understanding of anesthesia.Most researchers and patients are concerned about procedure and experience of perianesthesia.Meanwhile,health care providers could provide information on the benefits and risks of general anesthesia to help patients make decisions.2.Medical experts interview: 10 anesthesia experts involved.5 topics and 16 subtopics formed from the interview,extending the content of pre-operative anesthesia education provided for patient with general anesthesia.3.Patients interview: 11 patients who are ready to undergoing the general anesthesia surgery were involved in the interview.8 topics related to patient anesthesia information needs were obtained from their pre-/post-operative interview.4.Content analysis: Based on the previous research,the draft of anesthesia health education content provided for general anesthesia patients was formed,including 5 topics,18 sub-topics and 79 items.5.Focus group interview: The first round of interview contained health care providers group(n=7),patients group(n=8).The second round of interview contained health care providers group(n=5).A total of 12 preoperative anesthesia health education practitioners / management(health care providers),8 preoperative anesthesia education recipients(patients)were involved in the focus group interview.The contents of preoperative anesthesia education provided for general anesthesia patients including 5 topics,18 sub-topics and 72 items.Conclusion: 1.Different roles of anesthesia researchers/associations from different national have concerned about preoperative anesthesia patient education.Based on the evidence-based scoping review method,5 topics were formed.In preoperative anesthesia education,following information should provide: the basic knowledge of anesthesia,as the foundation for patient participation;the process of peri-anesthesia,to encourage patients participate in the care;the risk and benefits of anesthesia,to facilitate patient participation in decision making,sharing the risks.2.Themes from clinical care providers interview covered part of topics and items from scoping review,and also added several sub-topics and item.Involving medical experts’ recommendation in constructing the content of anesthesia education is a guarantee of the practicability and applicability of the results.3.Patients’ anesthesia information needs reflected from their questions,misunderstandings,and postoperative re-cognitive.Patients and medical staff had differences in the cognitive of health education contents.Patients information needs involved in the construction of the anesthesia health education content,ensuring the effectiveness of educational content.4.Focus group interview promoted contents of anesthesia education fitting the current health care environment.Health care providers group standard the contents from the clinical professional.Patients group had less contribution to the results,but provoke thinking,need to further explore in the future.5.Based on this result,a series of research on forms and tools of anesthesia education would be conducted in the future.With the development of patients’ anesthesia satisfaction questionnaire,effectiveness of the results could be examined.Also,the content of anesthesia education will be improved and updated.
