Mencius’ "The Perfect Gentleman" Theory

It has important historical value and realistic significance to study the Mencius theory.Over the years,the domestic and foreign researches on“Mencius”are numerous.On the basis of previous studies,this paper divides three parts discussing the theory of Mencius’“the perfect gentleman”and analyses“the perfect gentleman”in the whole Mencius’ Theory System illustrating the influence on the debate with Yangzhu and Mozi and how it applies to the later Confucianism inheritance and the real-world.The first part of the article:Combing the speech about“the perfect gentleman”in"Mencius",this part will discuss“the perfect gentleman”on the three aspects of his theory of human nature,individual morality and the social politics to indicate the following points:"the perfect gentleman" is good at being the conscience and dealing with the relationship between humans’ morality and animality that he can think consciously with the heart and mind to play the dominant role of the heart and resist the temptation of desire;therefore,"the perfect gentleman" can love and teach people well in the social and political management.The second part of the article:putting the concept of "the perfect gentleman" in the whole system of Mencius theories,it will be compared with the existence of morality,the existence of animality,the justice,the destiny,the human relations and the benevolent to prove that:“the perfect gentleman”should be intended to keep his kind heart and resist the desires of material and always be righteousness.By means of setting up aspirations,subtracting the desires and encountering difficulties,"the perfect gentleman" can enhance their own realm.Similarly,“the perfect gentleman”not only can take care of the demand about people’s desire,but he also can guide them to be good.The third part of the article:the goal of the studying on is to understand Mencius’ theory better.And in the foundation of the whole system of theory,the thought of“the perfect gentleman”has significance to the modern society composition:the attitude on the interests and desires of“the perfect gentleman”plays a critical role on the debate with Yangzhu and Mozi;the independent personality and character to bear and the attitude of righteousness make double Influence on the later Confucianism and Chinese cultural heritage;and we will mention the positive significance which Mencius’“the perfect gentleman”give to us at last.
