The report is based on the translation practice of three chapters of Things Fall Apart by the famous African writer Chinua Achebe.From the perspective of Peter Newmark’s translation theories,it discusses how to reproduce the cultural meaning of the source text in the process of English-Chinese translation.The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One introduces the translation task,the source text and its author.Chapter Two describes the translation process,including pre-translation,during-translation and proofreading.Chapter Three expounds Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theories and discusses its applicability to the translation of Things Fall Apart.Chapter Four,by case studies,explores the translation of proverbs,idioms and primitive religion under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theories.Chapter Five summarizes the translator’s gains and shortcomings from her translation practice.
