Internet information technology has applied to every aspect of people ' s life.Including problem solving and learning.Compared with general circumstance. There are a vast of information nodes in Internet hypertext environment which are disordered and ill-organized,therefor we will encounter challenge while retrieving and processing information.Meanwhile,Internet is a gold mine as well as a information garbage can, which means that not only organizing and integrating information skill is important, searching.,filtering and processing sill also weights, and even weights much more than previous one in the traditional settings.Hence, online problem solvers are called for stricter requirement. This research explored how metacognition affect the information processing of online problem solving and the effects on cognitive thinking and metacognitive thinking distribution of each dimension(complexity, temporal sequence and hyperlinks types included)of problem solving. Two studies are included.Study 1 intend to examining how metacognition affect the information processing of online problem solving and the mediating effect of information processing effectiveness and lostness index. This study used the College Students' Metacognitive Ability Scale, information processing index, lostness index,open-end problem solving tasks as measurements of individual metacognition, information processing quality and online problem solving outcomes.results are:(1)metacognition and its four sub-dimension scores positively related with problem solving outcomes;(2)information processing index positively related with simple problem solving outcome while negatively with difficult one thus it ' s sensitive to task complexity.(3)lostness negatively related with problem solving performance.(4)lostness index partially mediate the relationship between metacognition and problem solving outcome.(5)information processing index partially mediate the relationship between metacognitive monitoring and simple problem solving outcome.Online problem solving is a complex dynamic processing course, mixed with ones such as complexity, temporal sequence characters and links elements with information value.Study 2 exploit think-aloud method explore cognitive and metacognitive thinking features while solving problem online and how metacognition affect personal thinking level distribution of each dimension of problem solving. Results showed:(1)higher metacognition(HM)solvers got higher marks in the simple task than lower metacognition(LM)ones. But it had no difference in difficult task.(2)there is no difference between HM and LM group in click times of various links. However, when considering browsing time,it showed that HM group pay more time on interferential links than LM group in difficult task. While solving a simple one,HM group spent less time on irrelevant links than LM group.(3)temporal sequence difference:HM group had more metacognitive activities in the early and terminal phase than LM group.(4)differences when processing different links:in the difficult task, comparing with LM group,HM group had more active metacognitive activities when they browsing a interferential links; While solving a simple problem,HM group's metacognitive activities proportion was more than LM ones when turned to irrelevant links. These findings provide evidences that:(1)metacognition,information processing quality and problem solving performance are interrelated;(2)metacognition could had effect on problem solving outcomes mediated by information processing effectiveness;(3)the effect of metacognition to information processing could be seen in the dimension of task complexity, information processing temporal sequence and link types,as individual with different level of metacognition would showed difference on metacognitive thinking proportion features in these dimensions.
