Oral English teaching is an important part in college English teaching in our country.And at this new stage of the society,Oral English talents are in greater need and received higher requirements.Vocational students,who occupy a great percentage of the total number of students in our country,contribute widely to society.Therefore,their oral English ability should be given more attention.However,teachers do not give enough concern to their oral English development.So how to improve vocational students'oral English through effective English teaching methods should be a topic of vital importance."Oral Length Method",an oral English teaching method derives from the Output Hypothesis,contributes greatly in oral English teaching.This research,which is based on the output hypothesis,uses oral length method as its teaching method and aims to investigate the validity and feasibility of oral length method used in teaching oral English in vocational colleges.In doing the experiment,the author selects two parallel classes in Grade Two of Fujian Ship Transportation Vocational College and 92 students act as subjects.The whole experiment was carried out for about 16 weeks.One class is the experiment class in which the oral length method is used for training oral English.The controlled class,on the other hand,is taught in the traditional way.All the data collected from the research were processed with the SPSS.19.0 and the Excel for analysis and discussion.The findings of the research are as follows.Firstly,the application of oral length method to the teaching of oral English helps to improve vocational college students' oral ability.The students in the experimental class make more progress than those in the controlled class who were taught in the traditional way.Secondly,the experimental class students acquired higher marks in the post-test than in the pre-test,which shows that they gained great development.Thirdly,the application of oral length method to teaching oral English helps to motivate students' oral English enthusiasm and arouse students' oral English interest.Most students in the experiment class began to adopt a positive attitude to do oral English and greatly change their oral English attitudes.Lastly,in practical oral English teaching,it is necessary to cultivate students'awareness of oral length method and improve students' sensibility of oral length method.Let students speak English as long as possible to improve their confidence in learning English and ability in expressing English.The research has significance in supplementing the output study on the application of oral length method based on the output hypothesis in oral English teaching as well as practical value in improving oral English teaching in vocational colleges.
