A Report On The Translation Of The First Chapter Of How Emotions Are Made:the Secret Life Of The Brain

The present report is based upon the first chapter of How Emotions Are Made:The Secret Life of the Brain written by the famous American psychologist Lisa Feldman Barrett.In this popular science book about psychology,the author summarizes most of the contemporary theories relevant to emotions,and comes up with a new theory of how the brain constructs emotions that can revolutionize psychology,health care,the legal system,and understandings of the human mind.Emotions are closely related to our daily life and deserve much attention.Therefore,the translation of this book is beneficial to the understanding of emotions,the human mind as well as the ability of emotion control.The translation report is mainly composed of four parts.Part One is a description of the translation task,introducing the source,the author,the content and the great importance of the translation material.Part Two includes the pre-translation preparation,the difficulties in translation and the revision.Part Three is case analysis which classifies the difficulties of the translation from the following three aspects of vocabulary,syntax and discourse.In terms of vocabulary,it mainly deals with the translation of professional terms,pronouns and polysemants.The syntax part covers the translation of attributive clauses,punctuation marks as well as the long and difficult sentences.The third aspect is mainly analyzed from the perspectives of ellipsis and repetition,so as to thoroughly comprehend the difficulties of the original text and ensure the faithfulness of the translation.The second and the third part are the core parts of this report.In conclusion,the fourth part summarizes the experience and gains of the translation process so as to lay a profound foundation for future translation.
