A Report On E-C Translation Of The Future Of Translation Technology:Towards A World Without Babel(Chapter One)

This is a report on E-C translation of Chapter 1 of The Future of Translation Technology: Towards a World without Babel,which is an English book written by Prof.Chan Sin-wai of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.This book was published in 2017 by Routledge,which contains 6 chapters,with more than 120,000 words.The main idea of Chapter 1 is the author's objective analysis of translation techniques,especially computer-aided translation techniques in chronological order,mainly about its development in different countries and regions after the production of computer-aided translation.As a graduate student majoring in translation,the translator thinks that the professionalization of translation has become an inevitable trend of times,and the progress of translation technology can save translators' retrieval time and improve their work efficiency.The three translators,including the translator,think that this book conforms to the current situation of the society.Thus,under the guidance of the translator's supervisor,a translation team was founded,aiming to translate the book with a prospect of having a chance to publish in the future.By analyzing the original text,the translator found that its main content is to introduce the generation and development of computer-aided translation technology and that the text is professional and its language is rigorous and concise.Reiss divides texts into three types,namely,the informative text,expressive text and vocative text,among which she believes the main content of the informative one is to reflect the objective facts and convey information.Therefore,the translator concludes that the original text belongs to the informative one.Besides,the translation of this kind of text is mainly to convey the original information accurately and to ensure the readability of the translation.In addition,Vermeer believes that translation is a purposeful act,and the purpose of translation determines the translation method to be adopted by the translators in the process of translation.In this translation practice,the main purpose is to popularize computer-aided translation technology among target language readers and to convey the original information in an objective and authentic way.Therefore,guided by Vermeer's Skopos theory,following the principle of skopos,the principle of coherence and the principle of loyalty and the translation criteria of faithfulness,smoothness and coherence,the translator has adopted such skills in the process of translation as voice conversion,linear translation,reverse translation,hoping to make the language of the translation objective,accurate and consistent with the norms of the target language.The translation report is made up of four chapters.Chapter one is a description of the translation project,including the source of the translation task,a brief introduction to the original text and the significance of the translation project.Chapter two explains the process of her translation,including the preparation of translation tools,the formulation of glossary,the preparation of translation theories and the formulation of translation plans and analysis and modification of the translation.Chapter three is case analysis,which is the core of the translation report,whose main contents include the difficulties in the process of translation,and the selection and case analysis of corresponding translation skills under the guidance of Skopos theory.Chapter five is a summary of the translation practice,in which the translator summarizes the experience from this translation practice and provides an outlook for her translation work in the future.
