Textbook is not only the carrier of language knowledge, but also an important material of successful teaching activities,as a result, the successful compiling of textbook is essential to the teaching process and studying process. As there are many different kinds of junior middle school English textbooks in China and different textbooks have different features,an analysis of textbook is particularly important. In order to keep pace with the development of society,to know about the differences and similarities in middle school English textbook design between China and other countries, this thesis makes a comparison between GFI(Go for it,used in China)and MSE(Middle School English, used in South Korea)from the aspects of structure and contents of Listening and Speaking sections. The comparison of structure between GFI and MSE includes the analysis of the system of the textbooks and the structure between Listening and Speaking sections. The comparison of contents of Listening and Speaking sections is composed of three aspects:objectives, topic selection and activity design. This thesis finds that both GFI and MSE pay much attention to both Listening and Speaking and the way of learning by creating contexts of communication. The differences between GFI and MSE lie in the following three respects: 1)the arrangement of phonetic knowledge;2)the design of pre-listening activities;and 3)the selection of topics.Meanwhile, four suggestions for textbook compilation are provided in the thesis: 1)to integrate teaching materials and to combine two books of each semester into one;2)to add learning resource retrieval;3)to provide an easy way to learning materials;and 4)to focus on oral communications and add periodic review units. What's more, this thesis also gives some suggestions to English teachers: 1)to integrate teaching materials;2)to lay emphasis on phonetic teaching;3)to create contexts of communication and develop extensive English communication activities;and 4)to foster the independent learning capability and cooperation ability of the students.
