As the renowned and great composer in France between the late 19th century and the early 20th century,Claude Debussy had created one new music style as a unique prospect in history.Not only had his musical language been original,but it had broken through the tradition bravely,constructed a evocative music edifice and revealed a wonderful and charming world of music.Combining perfectly the western composition techniques with the eastern cultural factors,Debussy had composed considerable masterpieces with ingenious musical thoughts.Although he was an occidental composer,his works had assimilated diverse artistic and aesthetic thoughts and coalesced the representatives of spirits from both parts.In his art works,we could often find a great deal of oriental elements.With respect to the connection between Debussy and the Orient,there has been masses of research.Yet few of them was based on the perspective of Oriental Aesthetics.The three pianoludes selected by this article,Pagoda,Jardins Sous La Pluie and The Snow is Dancing,are Debussy’s magnum opus in his composition mature period,including numerous features of music.The oriental art such as Japanese print Ukiyoe,Indonesian Gamelan music and Chinese traditional opera already had had far-reaching effects on Debussy’s composition and his aesthetic thoughts.Taking the three pieces of works mentioned above for example,based on the studies by the predecessors,and from the perspective of oriental aesthetics,this thesis puts forward several personal viewpoints and demonstrates how Debussy created oriental atmosphere with western imagos.
