The publication of The Basic Education Curriculum Reform Outline is a mark that the basic education under the concept of people oriented has entered an entirely new era in China.With the deepening of innovation in basic education reform,people pay more attention to students interest in English.Therefore,it is a primary task for English teaching to stimulate students interest in studying English in primary school.It is well known that teachers play an important role in English class.The design of teachers’ teaching affects students’ interest in learning English to a certain extent.At present,there are many teachers in some primary schools just adopting the traditional teaching approach,such as only reading,writing and reciting in English class.Such a single and boring class form is not beneficial for the enlightenment of English learning for the children.What’s more,it might lead some students to be tired of English.In this paper,the author tries applying the game teaching approach to English class to solve this problem.Game teaching approach is a type of teaching activities that integrate the form of game into teaching.Students can learn in a relaxing atmosphere,which reflects the modern educational concept that teaching goes together with pleasure.This paper is an empirical study on the application of game teaching approach to English teaching in primary school.The research questions are as follows:(1)Can the game teaching approach stimulate student s interest in English class in primary school?(2)Can the application of game teaching approach improve student s English achievement?(3)What are the attitudes of teachers towards game teaching approach in English teaching?The author conducted the experiment that lasted for about one semester from Sept.4,2017 to Jan.12,2018 in Zhongxin primary school,Anshan.The two parallel classes in Grade Five were chosen as control class(CC)and experiment class(EC).There are 36 students in each class.The author applied game teaching approach to EC,and applied traditional method to CC.The experiment instruments were questionnaire,test,interview and SPSS.At the beginning of experiment,the pre-questionnaire was conducted in EC and pre-test was conducted in CC and EC.At the end of the experiment,the post-questionnaire was conducted in EC and post-test was used in both classes.And then,the author interviewed four English teachers.The experiment data was analyzed by SPSS.The experimental results show that game teaching approach can promote English teaching.It can improve students English achievement.What s more,the application of game teaching approach makes students more interested in English and makes the classroom atmosphere active.There are four English teachers attending the interview.Three fourths teachers have a positive attitude towards game teaching approach.The author hopes that this study helps teachers in primary school English teaching,and brings some enlightenment for the future English teaching,so the English teaching can achieve better results in the future.
