With the deepening of reform,China has expanded its cooperation with other countries in various areas in recent years, from which ensues an increased number of international construction projects undertaken by Chinese companies. To meet the need of smooth communication between Chinese and foreign technicians in construction,on-site interpretation is needed and a large number of engineering documents requires to be translated. However,it poses great challenges to translators without engineering background on how to deal with technical terms, syntactic structures and language style in an appropriate way in translating these documents.Based on the Chinese-English translation practice of the Special Construction Scheme for Subgrade Test Section(hereinafter referred to as the Scheme),the author analyzes problems encountered during the process and writes this report, with the aim of exploring proper translation methods for this type of text. This report summarizes problems and difficulties encountered in this practice, and focuses on exploring appropriate translation methods for terms and sentences proceeding from the perspective of engineering translation by applying Skopos theory. Moreover, this report also proposes possible approaches to improve the capacity of translators. This report consists of five parts:Chapter one briefs background of this report and significance of the translation practice;chapter two describes the task, introducing the translation project and analyzing the source text and target readers;chapter three deals with the translation process, including preparation, translation and proofreading;chapter four analyzes specific examples based on Skopos theory and discusses the appropriate translation methods for this text;the last chapter makes a conclusion on this translation practice and put forward suggestions for improving the capability of translators.
