A Study Of The Space Narration Of Edward Yang’s Films

Edward Yang and Hsiao-Hsien Hou are known as the twin stars of the new film movement in Taiwan.As the flag bearer of the new film movement,his bold innovation of the film language and narrative techniques makes the Taiwan films attract the wide attention of the world.Edward Yang’s city and family build a movie for the middle line.It is good at using image and multi line narrative techniques to show the change of the city and the state of human existence.Especially for the narrative of movie space,Edward Yang expressed his own spiritual emptiness and the hypocrisy of interpersonal relationship through his own unique influence.The film is a comprehensive art of space and time.Former scholars mainly study Edward Yang’s films from the point of view of time.Edward Yang,especially the creation of the film space,shows its grand narrative ability,and has not paid enough attention to the research of Edward Yang films by using the angle of space Narratology.This thesis mainly uses space narratology as the theory,taking Edward Yang’s eight films as the research object,and carries on the thorough analysis to its movie spatial narration aspect.This thesis consists of three chapters.The first chapter,"film space and narration" is mainly a summary of the concept,the narrative space of film and the space of narrative,and the research path of Space Narration in Edward Yang’s films.The second chapter,"the construction of space narrative space in Edward Yang’s film",mainly from the construction of the center space of the city and family that Edward Yang is good at using,showing the symbolic function of the urban space and the family space.Edward Yang’s unique construction of movie space is demonstrated from audio-visual perspective.The third chapter,"the function of Edward Yang’s film space narration",mainly discusses the limitation and molding of the character image in the film space,as well as the concrete presentation of the spatial narrative structure and the spatial narrative tension of Edward Yang’s films.
