A Report On The E-C Translation Of Technical Tender Documents For Procurement Of Pressure Vessels

Tendering and bidding are the most crucial steps for companies to get involved in commercial activities in international markets.In tendering and bidding process,the translation of tender documents is of great importance,and special attention should be paid to the translation of the technical part too.To some extent,translation of technical tender documents with accuracy and faithfulness can even determine whether the tendering activity is successful or not.Therefore,the importance and necessity of translation of technical tender documents should be taken into careful consideration again now.This report is based on the author’s translation of the engineering specification and packing requirements of the Technical Tender documents for Procurement of Pressure Vessels.With case analysis as the core,this report comprises five chapters,including introduction,task description,translation process,case analysis and conclusion.Tender documents in essence is a commercial contract,belonging to the serious legal language category,featuring the binding force of law to restrain the rights,obligations and responsibilities of the tenderee and tenderer.Tender documents generally include three parts---economic,technical and commercial tender,of which the technical part is a typical informative type text.Considering the status quo of E-C translation of tender documents,this thesis analyzes a number of typical translation difficulties the translator encountered in translating such texts by conducting some real case studies.From the perspectives of lexis,syntax and style of discourse,the author illustrates the features of the Source Text and comes up with some countermeasures to cope with the difficulties as well.Under the guidance of the three principles of Skopos theory,this thesis emphasizes the aim of translation of tender documents and analyzes the purpose of selection of translation methods adopted by translators in translation activities.As the most important theory of functionalism,Skopos theory holds that translation methods or strategies must be determined by the intended purpose or function of the translation.From the perspective of realizing the objectives of translation task,the author used some CAT tools to make the translation work more efficient and more effective;from the perspective of realizing the purpose of TT,to make Target Text smoother and more coherent,some translation methods and skills were adopted,such as addition,deletion,change of word order,transference of sentence structure,shift of part of speech,voice transformation,adding personal reference etc.,hence some difficulties at lexical,syntactical and stylistic level were solved.Finally,the author reviews and summarizes the difficulties of this translation task.The author also puts forward some corresponding measures and sums up the problems that need to be noticed in translating similar texts,in the hope of giving some references to other translators and guiding the author’s future translation work.
