Pouch Embroidering,as a folk minor well-known to even every household in China,has entered its completion after times of revising and refining in the long history.It has gradually evolved into a family of folk songs with diverse variants largely similar to each other during its spread.These Pouch Embroidering variants are just like a splendid garden in which every variant is a flower and blossoms with its own unique features.This thesis conducts detailed analysis of thirty five collected Pouch Embroidering minors that are popular in Shanxi province from the perspective of literature,music,and singing respectively,and provides a general grasp of their overall artistic features and cultural connotations by using methods like documentary study,field investigation,diagram method,method of comparative analysis,and practical experience,based on the collection and analysis of local music literature.Nowadays there are fewer and fewer people who are willing to pass on the torch of folk music with the development of the society,the improvement of living standards,and the changes in educational environment and people’s aesthetic needs.Especially as modern technologies develop increasingly fast,a large number of excellent folk music works are facing severe danger of dying out which is really worrying.It is an arduous mission for the contemporary musicians to protect and carry forward these folk music works,whose purpose is not merely to record and outline these valuable cultural heritages,but more importantly to make in-depth analysis on the nature and inherent relations of these folk music works,so that they can last generation after generation as “Memories in Words”.There are two evident characteristics of this thesis: First of all,it conducts a vertical comparison to analyze these thirty five Pouch Embroidering songs in Shanxi province and discusses several typical ones among them in detail through diagrams.At the same time,it makes a horizontal comparison of representative Pouch Embroidering songs popular in various provinces to demonstrate the similarities among them.It uses net structure of cross comparison both vertically and horizontally to conduct a more direct analysis.Secondly,this thesis applies dialectology to interpret the phonetic,lexicological,and grammatical characteristics of the lyrics of these songs,and to show the relations between the lyrics and the melodic trends through tones of local dialects.This thesis is divided into six parts,namely Introduction,Part 1: Minors in the Culture of Song Family and “Clan” Phenomenon,Part 2: Profile of Pouch Embroidering Minor Song Family,Part 3: Analysis on Literary Features of Pouch Embroidering Song Family in Shanxi,Part 4: Analysis on Musical Features and Singing Styles of Pouch Embroidering Song Family in Shanxi,and Part 5: The Protection and Inheritance of Folk songs in Shanxi。 The details are as follows:The Introduction part:This part mainly introduces the research overview,current research status,reasons,purposes and meanings of the topics,concrete research methods,innovations and disadvantages in this study,and additional instructions.Among them the “Research Overview” part generally summarizes the genres,themes,and overall styles of folk songs in Shanxi at large respectively.The “Current Research Status” part conducts digital and representative calculation and analyzing on works,articles,and journals related to Shanxi folk songs and Pouch Embroidering minor songs,which provides initial ideas for the composition of this thesis.The “Reasons,Purposes and Meanings of the Topics ” part represents the characteristics of “largely identical with only minor differences” and “what is unchanging is changing ”in folk songs through the philosophical basis of “variability”,and thus decides the theme of this thesis,that is to analyze and study the artistic features of Pouch Embroidering Song Family.In the meanwhile,the purpose of this thesis is to protect and carry forward Shanxi folk songs and respond to the advocacy of intangible cultural heritage,and its core meaning lies in avoiding the situation of “all of a piece” and preserving mainstream refined culture.The “Additional Instructions” part describes the origins and forms of score samples seen in the thesis and also provides some additional contents.Part 1: Minors in the Culture of Song Family and “Clan” Phenomenon:This part is mainly divided into two sections.Section 1 “Folk Minors” discusses two topics,namely the formation,development,and popularity of minors,and the artistic styles of minors.Section 2 “Minors and the ‘Clan’ Phenomenon” discusses two topics,to be specific,the formation,development,spread,evolution of folk songs of the same “clan”,and the inevitability and rationality of the “clan” phenomenon in minors.These two sections are echoing and interconnected with each other.From this part,we can see that the variability of minors is the primary cause for the spread and evolution of the minors.Chapter 1 paves the way for the literary analysis and musical analysis in Part 3 and Part 4.Part 2: Profile ofPouch Embroidering Minor Song Family: This part is mainly divided into two sections.The first section “The Origin of Pouch Embroidering Minors” discusses the folk tradition of embroidering pouches at first,and then makes a vertical outline of the historical tracks of Pouch Embroidering Minors to further depict the dynamic existence of Pouch Embroidering.By comprehensively using tables and data aboutPouch Embroidering Minors collected from twenty four provinces,Section 2 “Current Status of Pouch Embroidering Minors” compares the similarities and differences of diverse Pouch Embroidering Minors in the Northern China and the Southern China to further analyzes the current status through the tables and data collected from twenty four provinces(calculated by county)in detail,with Pouch Embroidering in Shanxi: Vocal music literature(lyrics)is a special literarygenre that is rich in contents and diverse in expressions.The lyrics of Pouch Embroidering well shape the relations between women and “the pouches”.In Section 1 “Expressing Means of Lyrics and Their Clan”,the author divides the expressing means of thirty five Pouch Embroidering songs collected in Shanxi into six types of categories,including “containing sentiment in scenery”,“expressing ideas by describing things” and “exchanging affection mutually”.It is easy for us to notice that all these distinct expressing means are centered on “pouch embroidering”,for it is the core literary theme and shows the consistency and clan phenomenon of lyrics.Section 2 “Literary Thoughts Implied by the Numbers” discuses two special narrative ways,namely time sequence and number sequence.Section 3 “The Application of Lining Words,Reduplicate words,and Rhotic Accents” generalizes thirty five Pouch Embroidering songs in the form of diagrams and analyzes several examples among them.The analysis above fully proves the literary charms in the artistic features of Pouch Embroidering songs.Part 4: Analysis on Musical Features and Singing Styles of Pouch Embroidering Song Family in Shanxi: This chapter and Chapter 3 are the core of the thesis and its focus as well.This chapter conducts discussion in two parts.The first part analyzes the musical features: It learns about the overall styles of folk minor songs in different regions in Shanxi province,and classifies these thirty five Pouch Embroidering songs collected by the author accordingly by approximate color regions,and then analyzes several representative ones among them thoroughly.At last,the author use tables to show these thirty five Pouch Embroidering songs and reaches the conclusion by analyzing their rhythms,scales,melodic lines,musical structures,and even word segments and numbers.The second part is about the singing styles: to analyze the singing styles and features of Pouch Embroidering songs mainly from the aspects of their tune-lubricating characteristics and dialect intonations.Part 5: The Protection and Inheritance of Folk songs in Shanxi:The purpose and meaning of this chapter is to make a further summary and lift up the main theme.Folk songs are the precious treasures and essential sources of our traditional culture,as well as the foundation upon which our confidence is built.The author is seeking to find a realistic solution and ideas to address the challenges faced by the traditional culture in its protection and inheritance in recent years based on the initial achievements so far.
