The original rock musical production Next to Normal with music by Tom Kitt,books and lyrics by Brian Yorkey,features an array of 7 characters on stage.As a paradigm of small-theater productions,the musical offers a modern theme,fresh perspectives,and catchy music and lyrics.This paper is sectioned into three divisions.The first goes into length about the synopsis,creative background,and stage design of the entire musical.Secondly,the character Gabe is analyzed at length on an overall scale,from his external features,his internal characteristics,to his relationships and interactions with other characters within the story.Finally,by using three of Gabe's solos as examples,and combined with the author's own performing experiences,form the characterization process of Gabe.This paper seeks to thoroughly explore the character development process of Gabe on and off stage. |
