Saul Bellow is a celebrated writer in the United States in the 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1976.As a Jewish writer,Bellow has added many Jewish cultural properties in the writing so that his works can reflect the deep Jewish color. The author chooses Bellow’s late work More Die of Heartbreak as the research target in this thesis, focusing on the interpretation of the cultural properties in it.The whole thesis includes two perspectives of the Jewish culture including the religious aspect and the secular aspect. In the religious perspective,it deals with the Judaism’s basic concepts and cultural motifs reflected by the novel, for example, the concepts of wisdom and aesthetics, the motif of wandering and the motif of guilt and redemption. In the secular perspective,it focuses on the discussion of the Jewry’s alien awareness rooted in the Jewish culture, mainly including the influence of their alien identity to the secular attitudes towards money, materials and family. At the end,a conclusion will come up naturally. In the conclusion, the author will emphasize the profound cultural properties reflected by this novel and the universal significance of the Jewish culture.
