Vocabulary is an important part of a language and it plays an important role in the teaching and learning of a foreign language.However,high school English teachers usually neglect guiding students to learn and memorize words efficiently and always use traditional vocabulary teaching methods in class.Therefore,it is rather difficult for the students to learn new words.They usually spend a lot of time memorizing words but get very poor result.Therefore,it is very important for high school English teachers to try to adopt different teaching methods to help students learn and memorize words more proficiently.This research intends to apply schema theory to English vocabulary teaching.By making use of abundant knowledge stored in their mind,students can construct schematic network to alter the habit of reciting new words mechanically and learn new words efficiently.And the aim of the study is to explore the following two aspects:(1)Can the teaching methods based on schema theory enhance students’ using of methods of English vocabulary learning in high school?(2)Can the vocabulary teaching methods based on schema theory in high school help students enlarge the size of vocabulary?The thesis contains six chapters.Chapter one is about the background,significance and structure of the thesis.Chapter two is to introduce literature review,which gives a review of the study on the application of schema theory in vocabulary teaching at home and abroad.Chapter three is about the theoretical frame of the thesis,including the theory of schema and vocabulary teaching.Chapter four is the methodology.The participants were 100 students from No.l Middle School of Gao Tai.And the test and questionnaire were used in the research.Chapter five consists of the collection and analysis of data.And all the collected data were analyzed by SPSS16.0.At last,chapter six shows the results of the research and limitations found in the research.And the following findings are achieved: Firstly,students receiving schema-based vocabulary presentation scored significantly higher in learning and memorizing new words.Secondly,students in the experimental class have changed a lot in their vocabulary learning methods after the experiment.In short,the study shows that schema theory has more practice in vocabulary learning.Besides,the study can help students master a scientific theory and more efficient methods of vocabulary learning.By guiding students to learn and memorize words,it can also contribute to inspiring students’ interest of learning English.
